Socio-economic housing segregation in Sweden has increased since the 1990s. Both municipalities and other real estate actors are working today to reduce housing segregation in various ways, but more and better methods and tools are needed to break the trend.
- Sweden must have a long-term and sustainable housing policy for everyone and therefore it is important that we work actively to counteract housing segregation. Community planning should contribute to equal and good living conditions and people should also not have to worry about having to move because of, for example, large rent increases after renovations, says Housing Minister Johan Danielsson.
A special investigator is given the task of developing tools and methods to strengthen the work to reduce and counteract segregation in community planning. The investigator must also give an account of how the rental market parties and property owners work to make it easier for tenants to stay after renovation. The investigator must also map how public procurement can be used in community planning as a tool to reduce and counteract residential segregation, as well as propose measures to increase such use of public procurement.
Erik Pelling, who is currently chairman of the municipal board in Uppsala, is appointed as special investigator.
The assignment must be reported by 22 December 2023 at the latest.
