The new student housing project, named Mira, will consist of an eight-storey building comprising 101 apartments with capacity for 309 residents. The ground floor will host common areas, including laundry facilities and bicycle parking. The investment represents an important step towards addressing the acute shortage of student housing.
“We know demand for student accommodation is high across the country, and Akademiska Hus is committed to developing more campus housing. This is important both for us and for Gothenburg as an attractive student city. Moreover, student housing contributes to a more open and vibrant campus environment,” says Anna Alsborger, Director of Property at Akademiska Hus.
Akademiska Hus has signed a block lease for all Mira apartments with Stiftelsen Chalmers Studenthem, which in turn will rent them out to students.
“Proximity to campus is one of the strongest preferences among students when it comes to housing and a key factor in attracting talent to both Chalmers and Gothenburg,” says Joakim Wallin, CEO of Stiftelsen Chalmers Studenthem.
The apartments will include classic student studios and two-person units. In addition, larger shared apartments will be provided under Akademiska Hus’ co-living concept, accommodating up to six residents, each with a private bedroom while sharing kitchen, living room, and bathroom.
“Shared living offers many benefits. It promotes social interaction and helps prevent loneliness, which many students experience when moving to a new city. It is also sustainable, as functions and spaces are used more efficiently,” notes Linda Teng, Concept Manager for student and researcher housing at Akademiska Hus.
A new zoning plan for Gibraltarvallen, where Akademiska Hus owns 90 percent of the land, was adopted in August 2023. The plan allows for the development of new housing, services, and academic facilities, alongside a new square and park, thereby enabling Campus Johanneberg to become a more integrated part of the city. Mira will be the first step in realising this zoning plan. In addition to student and researcher housing, the building will also include a grocery store and smaller commercial premises on the ground floor.
In total, Mira will encompass approximately 9,300 square meters. The façades will be built with reused brick, and the building will feature a timber frame, French balconies, and a glazed ground floor facing Gibraltargatan. To reduce energy consumption, solar panels and heat recovery from the grocery store will be installed. Construction is planned to begin in early 2026, with student occupancy expected in winter 2027.
